In Focus

New Thursday consulting session from October

We are pleased to announce that the clinic will offer Thursday consulting sessions commencing 1st October 2020. Our new associate ophthalmologist Dr Dina El Sayed will lead these sessions, which will include bulk billing for pension card holders.

Dr Sayed is a skilled ophthalmologist with significant expertise in diagnosing and managing cataracts, retinal diseases, ocular surface conditions and corneal diseases, as well as more general eye conditions. She also has a special interest in paediatric ophthalmology, strabismus (ocular motility or squint) and neuro-ophthalmology, and is fluent in both English and Arabic.

Clinic facilities

Vision Eye Institute Jacana is located in a well-established facility, ensuring the delivery of a great patient experience and the highest-quality ophthalmic care. The clinic includes a dedicated procedure room for intravitreal injections (eye injections) and there is also a YAG laser on site.

Our clinic is conveniently situated with free on-site parking, wheelchair access and nearby amenities, including Broadmeadows Public Hospital, Broadmeadows train station and local shops. Free WiFi and an accessible restroom is also available.

Surgical procedures are performed at Panch Day Surgery in Preston and Vision Day Surgery Footscray.

Clinic services

Our clinic provides services for the diagnosis, management and treatment of retinal diseases, including including diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration and intravitreal injections (eye injections). We also provide cataract and lens surgery, and ophthalmic care for patients with general eye conditions.

We have several staff members who speak other languages (Arabic, Cantonese, Malay) and may be available for translation purposes. Please note, however, that we cannot guarantee the availability of a translator. Where possible, patients are asked to bring someone who can translate for them.

Retinal conditions

Our retinal ophthalmologist Dr Mei Tan is one of the most experienced retinal specialists in Melbourne. Her research on retinal conditions has been published numerous times in peer-reviewed journals. Vision Eye Institute Jacana offers the full range of treatments for retinal conditions, including procedures for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, eye floaters, retinal tears and macular holes.

If you have a retinal appointment with us, please bring a pair of sunglasses with you to the consultation. This is because pupil-delating drops may be used to examine your retina, which may increase your sensitivity to light for a period after your appointment. Please also be aware that you may need to wait until your vision returns to normal after your consultation before you can drive home. If you are unable to wait after your appointment, you may wish to make other travel arrangements.

Cataract surgery

Cataract surgery involves the removal of a cloudy, hard-to-see-through lens from the eye, which is then replaced with a new artificial lens. This procedure is one of the most commonly performed in the world and it can have a transformative impact on a person’s life. Our cataract surgeons are highly experienced and will guide you through the process of choosing the replacement lens that best suits your individual needs.

Getting here

By car

Vision Eye Institute Jacana is conveniently located near the intersection of Johnstone St and Pascoe Vale Rd. On-site parking is available and there is easy access from the Western Ring Rd.

Please be aware that you may require pupil-dilating drops during your consultation with us. This medication can make your vision blurry and increase your sensitive to sunlight and glare. Because of this, you may be unable to drive and might need to arrange for someone to accompany you home or wait until the effects wear off before driving yourself. We also recommend that you bring a pair of sunglasses with you to your appointment.

By public transport

The clinic is located 10 minutes walk from Broadmeadows train station. The 542, 484, 901 and 902 bus routes also stop nearby.

Disability access

Our clinic is single-level and has wheelchair ramp access.
